How to Play Snake: Controls and Tips for a High Score
Snake is one of the most famous arcade games ever made. You steer a snake around the board to eat apples ๐. Every apple makes the snake longer, and it gets a little faster too. The game ends if the snake hits a wall or its own body.
Controls
- Phone: swipe in the direction you want to go, or use the arrow buttons under the board.
- Computer: use the arrow keys or W, A, S, D.
- You can't turn straight back into yourself. Quick double turns are remembered, so you can U-turn with two fast swipes.
Tips for a high score
- Stay near the walls early and keep the middle open.
- Don't cut across the board when you are long. Plan a path that leaves you an exit.
- Zigzag in rows when the snake gets very long. It uses space efficiently.
- Look ahead to where the next apple might appear and avoid boxing yourself into a corner.
A bit of history
The idea behind Snake goes back to the 1976 arcade game Blockade, but it became a worldwide hit in the late 1990s when it came preinstalled on Nokia mobile phones. A whole generation learned to play it on tiny monochrome screens, and it's still one of the most recognized games ever.
Points
Eating 15 apples earns 1 point, and 30 apples earns 2 points. Your best score is saved.
