How to Play Mahjong Solitaire: Rules and Tips
Mahjong Solitaire is a one-player matching game played with tiles stacked in layers. Your goal is to remove every tile by matching them in pairs. On Royal Duels the board has 80 tiles in three layers, and each picture appears four times.
The rules
- Tap two identical tiles to remove them.
- You can only pick a free tile: nothing is on top of it, and its left side or its right side is open. Free tiles look brighter.
- Clear the whole board to win.
Buttons
- Hint highlights a pair you can remove right now.
- Shuffle mixes the remaining tiles when you're stuck. You get three per game.
Tips
- Work on the top layer and the long rows first. Tiles that block many others matter most.
- When all four of a picture are free, remove them all.
- When only three are free, think before you match. The pair you pick decides which tile stays stuck.
- Open the ends of rows. Each tile you remove from an end frees the next one.
Every new board on Royal Duels is built so it can be solved, so careful play can always clear it.
A little history
Mahjong itself is a four-player game from China, played with 144 tiles. The one-player tile-matching version became popular as a computer game in the 1980s.
