Best Starting Words for 5-Letter Word Games (and Why They Work)
In a 5-letter word puzzle like Royal Word, your first guess has one job: rule letters in or out as fast as possible. A great opener can save you one or two guesses on average.
Why common letters win
The letters that show up most in English 5-letter words include E, A, R, O, T, L, I, S and N. A first guess built from these letters, with no repeats, has the best chance of turning something green or yellow. Rare letters like J, Q, X and Z are a waste of an opening guess.
Strong starting words
- SLATE and CRANE: common consonants plus A and E, very popular with experienced players.
- STARE, RAISE and ARISE: test S, T or I along with R, A and E.
- ADIEU or AUDIO: four vowels at once, good if you like to lock in vowels first.
A smart second guess
If your first word gave you little information, use a second word with five completely different common letters. For example, after CRANE, a word like SPLIT or MOIST tests new letters. Two well-chosen openers together cover most of the common alphabet, and you'll usually solve the puzzle by guess three or four.
Other tips
- Yellow means "somewhere else". Never put a yellow letter back in the same spot.
- Watch for double letters like the two Ps in APPLE or the two Es in SHEEP.
- Think about common endings such as -ER, -LY, -CH, -SH or -ED.
- Don't rush the last guesses. Write down possible words before using your final tries.
Royal Word gives you one new word each day. Solving it earns 2 points, or 3 if you get it in three guesses or fewer, and you can share your colored result without spoiling the answer.
